One of the bigger surprises of NBA free agency is perhaps the fact that Nikola Pekovic’s future with the Minnesota Timberwolves is still unresolved, and not really that close to being resolved.
Pekovic and his representatives will meet with Timberwolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders, owner Glen Taylor, and head coach Rick Adelman on July 29, one league source told Crossover Chronicles. At this meeting, the two sides are expected to come to a resolution, or at least closer to a resolution, about Pekovic’s future with the team, the source said.
The Timberwolves have an offer on the table for Pekovic: a four-year, $50 million contract extension, a league source told Crossover Chronicles. But so far, Pekovic has simply mulled over this offer while considering other possible options.
It’s no secret that Minnesota would love to have Pekovic back to play alongside Kevin Love. Pekovic is seen as the big body and does all the dirty work in the paint, which is why he plays well with Love.
Another option for Pekovic is to accept a one-year qualifying offer, which would make him an unrestricted free agent next summer. There’s a report out from a basketball blog that Pekovic will accept a qualifying offer from the Timberwolves, but that is just not true, a source close to Pekovic told Crossover Chronicles.
