DeShawn Stevenson Arrested For Public Intoxication

Dallas Mavericks guard DeShawn Stevenson, NBA champion and expert authority on who is and who is not “classless”, was arrested Tuesday night in Irvin, Texas.

According to a report from Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com:

Irving police said they were called to the Grand Venetian apartments about 10:30 p.m. local time Tuesday to check out a report of an intoxicated person walking in the area.

They found Stevenson, who does not live there, and he did not appear to know where he was. He was given a field sobriety test, and based on the test, his statements and police observations, he was arrested for public intoxication.

Stevenson did not resist arrest and posted bail of $475 about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. He was arrested because police believe Stevenson “was a danger to himself and others,” Irving public information officer John Argumaniz said.

“Basically, he was intoxicated to a point where [police] didn’t feel comfortable letting him walk away or leave. They didn’t have any other options at that point,” Argumaniz said.

Additionally, Steve Kyler of Hoopsworld.com tweeted further details of the incident:

“Police said they found Stevenson alone. Officers put him through field sobriety tests and then took him into custody without incident.”

Hey, there’s certainly a time and a place to party after winning your first championship. But getting to the point where you’re in the middle of a town you don’t live in, have no idea you’re in this town, and stumbling around drunk in public would certainly qualify as classless. (The residents of Irving should be grateful the police managed to stop him before he thought about getting behind the wheel and do any damage.) Then again Stevenson, as well as plenty in the media and the general public, were highly offended by Dwyane Wade and LeBron James coughing so I’m pretty sure he has to be pretty disappointed in himself once he’s sobered up and is made aware of his surroundings.

Maybe Abe Lincoln could help him out and explain the events that led him to getting arrested.
