Mike Miller made a minor splash in the NBA-starved sports news wire yesterday with the news his sweet, palatial property is on the market for a cool $8.9 million. Fresh off of signing a 5-year, $25 million contract with the Heat in 2010, the 11-year NBA veteran paid $5.4 million for the six-bedroom, nine-bathroom Mediterranean mansion. He has listed the Pompano Beach property for $8.995 million.
Set on a lot of more than a quarter-of-an acre, Miller’s waterfront property features views of the Atlantic Ocean. A private boat dock offers access to Hillsboro Bay, while the outdoor pool connects to a marble-laden wet bar.
The interior of Miller’s 9,968-square-foot pad features cathedral-style ceilings and marble running throughout the home, and includes a large den, media room and butlers quarters. The spacious master suite offers not one, but two master baths, highlighted by a raised Roman bathtub.
Turns out though, Miller doesn’t plan on leaving the Heat anytime soon. And yes, he’s heard of the proposed amnesty clause. Sun-Sentinel reporter Ira Winderman caught up with Miller after the news broke yesterday. So why did he put the house up for sale?
“It’s a couple of things,” Miller said. “Just preparing myself; never know what can happen.
“If anything happens with the amnesty, this is just going to be a business decision and I can respect that,” he said. “Teams will only get one opportunity to use it. I can respect that part of it.”
Not helping his case is the fact that he’s still rehabbing from the roughly several hundred injuries, by my count, that he acquired over the course of last season. So basically, off-season thumb and shoulder surgeries were in order once the Finals wrapped up.
“My thumbs aren’t causing any problems,” he said, with his right thumb injured at the start of last season and his left at the end. “Every once in a while, when I go to play I haven’t been able to do the things I wanted to do as far as wrapping them up with the training staff, that’s what’s made it a little more difficult.
“And I started to lift two months ago after they cleared my shoulder. I finally got to lift again for the first time in a couple of years the way I really wanted to.”
We can’t forget he’s “besties” with LeBron James and his old college roomie Udonis Haslem but Pat Riley isn’t exactly the sentimental type. However, the Heat may be able to hold off on when to actually utilize the amnesty clause so it might be in their best interest to first see what Miller (and Haslem) can do fully healthy alongside the Big 3, something that never actually happened last season. Of course, Miller could just as likely get re-injured in some other way in the meantime and make Riley’s decision that much easier.
