San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has coached five NBA championship teams and been a three-time NBA Coach of the Year. Isn’t it about time some high school was renamed after him? Not the court in the school gym, mind you, but the entire school. One dedicated Spurs fan in San Antonio is looking to maker that a possibility, even if the grumpy Popovich will not accept the honor.
Emmanuel Casasola has set up an online petition to have Robert E. Lee high School renamed in honor of Popovich. Casasola conceded many will find this to be a joke or a stunt, but he is serious in suggesting if the time comes for the high school he once attended alters its name, that it honor one of the top locals.
“I’m not advocating to change the name, but if it does change, it should be to honor one of our own,” Casasola said in an interview with mySA.com. “I think Popovich exemplifies several of the characteristics young people of today should strive for – leadership, commitment, loyalty and the way he and RC Buford have created an organization that is envied in all sports.”
The online petition has already soared past 1,000 signatures supporting the cause since being posted for the first time on November 12. Everything seems to have an online petition these days, so it remains to be seen if this one will have any lasting impact on the future of Robert E. Lee High School in Northeast Side. One thing is for sure though; graduating from Gregg Popovich High School may not dazzle, but you will leave with the fundamentals to life locked down for years to come.
