Now that the New Orleans Hornets have been sold, the new ownership is tossing around the idea of renaming the team but if they want to see a return to their roots and rename the franchise the “Jazz” there’s one slight problem — that’s Utah’s name.
See back in the day, New Orleans used to be named the Jazz but when the team relocated to Utah, the name followed.
But if anyone is thinking the name “Jazz” should be the name for the franchise, think again. NBA Commissioner David Stern thwarted any possibility of that happening despite New Hornets owner Tom Benson looking for a more appropriate team name.
“It belongs to Utah,” Stern said. “I wouldn’t make it such an important point. There are many things that are indigenous to the area. I’m sure there will be some wonderful nicknames (suggestion).”
Well there you have it, New Orleans won’t be renamed the Jazz. But it will be interesting what new team name will be conjured up.
Recently, our own Trevor Zickgraf came up with a few suggestions on a team name more reflective of the city and its people but why limit it to just that one avenue? Why not just think outside the box and think of other names not necessarily completely linked to the city?
With that being said, here are my ideas of a new team name for New Orleans:
- New Orleans Breeze. With the city right near the Gulf Coast, feeling the cool ocean breeze must be a norm for the citizens of New Orleans.
- New Orleans Flight. Get it? Flight, NBA players “fly” in the air for dunks. It’s just a cool name.
- New Orleans Avengers. Hey, Toronto did it when dinosaurs were the rage with Jurassic Park, so why not do the same with comic book-related movies the norm nowadays. I can picture it now, the battle cry of “Avengers assemble!” being blasted in the arena as the team comes out of the tunnel to take the court.
Well now that I nerded out with that last point, what about you Crossover fans? Let’s hear your best shot at a new team name for New Orleans.
