With just one more game left to the regular season, Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum crumbled to the ground after hyper-extending his right knee against the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night. Though he gingerly walked off the court on his own moments later, he was unwilling to attempt to get up even while the play continued which could have resulted in further injury to himself and others.
An MRI is scheduled for tomorrow where the entire league will wait for news on how much time, if any, he will miss.
Yes, the Lakers have plenty of experience playing without their talented, but brittle, center. Yet there’s no way getting around the reality that the Lakers could potentially have been dealt a fatal blow to their championship hopes before the postseason has even started.
With Spurs coach Gregg Popovich choosing to rest his starters and looking pretty wise in doing so, look for even more starters heading to the playoffs to get quite comfortable on the bench for the final games left this season.
Update: Results of the MRI show that Bynum only has a bone bruise and the injury is not deemed serious. By all accounts it appears that Bynum will be healthy enough to start the playoffs this weekend.
