Russell Westbrook decided to stay with the Oklahoma City Thunder long-term and prove that he is capable of leading them to a big season without Kevin Durant. He has been able to produce huge numbers, while also leading the Thunder to some big wins. Unfortunately, some tough losses have also come Oklahoma City’s way early this season.
Last night against the Los Angeles Lakers, Westbrook improved his MVP resume once again.
Westbrook scored 34 points on 13-30 shooting to go along with 13 assists and eight rebounds. He was unable to deliver the team a win, but he certainly did his part in making that happen.
It will be interesting to see what the rest of the regular season has in store for Westbrook and the Thunder. They currently have an 8-7 record, which would make them good enough to have the No. 6 playoff spot in the Western Conference. That isn’t where Westbrook wants to be, but he is having an excellent individual season.
Oklahoma City has embraced Westbrook as their superstar and hero. After seeing Durant leave the way he did, seeing Westbrook respond by re-signing with the Thunder was huge for the fan base.
Even with the big season that Westbrook has been having this year, he is far from guaranteed to win the MVP award. He will have to contend with plenty of other dynamic players around the NBA. That being said, it would be a bit of a shocker to see someone else win the award ahead of him.
Looking ahead at the remainder of the season, it will be interesting to see how far Westbrook can take the Thunder. It is apparent that he could use some help, but things won’t get much better. There is a chance that Oklahoma City could make a deal for a player like Rudy Gay, but that isn’t going to fix everything.
