The speculation that the Memphis Grizzlies were considering signing Delonte West did not hold much weight, but his next destination appears fairly concrete and is even outside of the NBA.
No, there are not any overseas plans for West in the works but the veteran guard could have a D-League future ahead of him if ESPN.com reports hold true.
According to Marc Stein, West has filed paperwork to enter the NBA D-League's player pool in hopes of returning to good favor with the Dallas Mavericks.
The Mavs let West go back in November but that does not necessarily mean their D-League affiliate is not willing to take a flier on West. According to the report, The Texas Legends (who are owned by Donnie Nelson) are at the top of the waiver wire and just might be in the process of reconciling with the well-traveled West.
The story is well documented: West’s bipolar disorder issues, fall out with teammates and front offices, Boston to Seattle to Cleveland back to Boston and then to Dallas, only to be waived after a brief suspension.
While West’s best season in the league came during the 2006-07 season with Boston when he averaged 12.2 points and 4.4 assists per game (69 games with 47 starts) he remains one of the go-to free agents on a long list whenever debate arises about teams making a signing and adding a shooting guard. But those discussions are usually reserved for NBA teams (like Memphis for example).
With West going the D-League route, he could be in position to show there is more than one way to make it back to the league.
