Despite Gay's and the Grizzlies' success this year, his massive contract has his team wringing him out in trade rumors |
It is that time of the year when trade rumors fly around the NBA like crazy, with most of them causing more strife and confusion in fans than they cause in actual roster changes.
The latest star to be rumored to be on the move is none other than Rudy Gay of the Grizzlies, who has been linked in trade talks for awhile now. The latest progression in the rumors surrounding him have led to a few teams being talked about with regards to acquiring the talented small forward, with teams like the Lakers, Raptors, and Celtics in the mix.
It appears that the scenario with the most traction at the moment is the one which would send Gay north of the border to the Raptors.
According to the ESPN.com report, the specifics of the trade — or potential trade — have not been discussed yet but it is believed that Jose Calderon and Ed Davis are two pieces that Memphis would get in return for Gay with Darrell Arthur possibly heading to Toronto as well to make the salaries work.
The rumor is still in its early stages and nothing is close to definitive at this point, but it is still something to consider with regards to the fluidity of NBA trades. Gay could end up going to the Raptors for the players mentioned or he could not be dealt at all; there is really no way to know what is actually going to happen.
Also included in that same ESPN report are the Boston Celtics, who recently lost point guard Rajon Rondo for the year with a torn ACL. In that possibility, Boston cornerstone Paul Pierce would likely be headed south to the Grizzlies, an occurence that would certainly shock fans of both the teams in addition to fans of the NBA in general.
The way in which trade rumors are developed in the NBA are certainly varied and sometimes, are predicated on nothing more than pure speculation.
That is why, especially considering how hard it is to pull off a trade involving a star like Gay is, it is imperative to take these rumors and whisperings from around the league with a grain of salt, at least until something more concrete presents itself.
