Magic’s Howard Close To Signing An Extension?

According to clickorlando.com, Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard could be close to signing a two-year extension with the team:

Magic center Dwight Howard spent the holiday weekend working on signing a two-year extension with the team, sources told Local 6 Sports Director David Pingalore late Monday.

Sources said the deal is all but signed by Howard.

Howard is a free-agent in 2012 and is considered the prize of that free-agent crop.

Howard recently said he does favor a return to the Magic Kingdom but would like to see more help on the court:

“I’m not trying to run behind nobody like Shaq or be behind somebody else.

“I want to start my own path and I want people to follow my path and not just follow somebody else’s path. I want to have my own path, and I want to start that here in Orlando. But I can’t do it alone. Not only do I need the right teammates, but I need the city behind me. That’s the only way it’s going to get done. We can change this small city that we have — this small market that we have — and we can make it a big market.”

This is music to Magic fans everywhere but can Orlando get Howard the needed help remains to be seen. They do not have cap flexibility to chase a solid free agent nor the right pieces to entice a trade which will bring in a quality player. Also, one has to factor in the new CBA deal and how it will affect smaller NBA markets like Orlando. Stay tuned.
