Paul Pierce Going All In

Paul Pierce is going all in this lockout. Well, not quite yet.

Pierce is in the World Series of Poker and does not seem to be doing too bad. He has survived the first round of the Main Event at the World Series of Poker and is drawing some praise from “poker guys.”

“The NBA superstar blends in with the field well, quietly raising, folding and calling with the rest of the masses in the Pavilion Room,” Andrew Feldman of ESPN.com’s Poker Blog writes. “Unless you see his huge green shoes, striped white and green socks, NBA championship ring, hat with the green 34 on the back or watch him stand up and tower over the rest of the players at his table, he basically is just another player in the room. Although that description might scream that he’s standing out, it isn’t the case at all.”

Yeah, I might be pretty intimidated if Pierce’s championship ring were glimmering right at my face while sitting on a straight draw. That might not be the case as many of the guys at this event are poker pros. And Pierce, well, he likely only has the time to play the game on flights to and from games (unless the Celtics are one of those teams that do not allow gambling on their charter flights).

Pierce has done pretty well. He was up to 70,000 chips entering the final break of Day 1C. At about midnight on Day 2A, Pierce was in 100th place with 86,000 chips. He was down 1,000 chips at that point and still 200,000 chips behind the leaders. A long way to go for Pierce. But he has all lockout to figure that out, right?

Somehow, I expect him to lose a hand and go down in a heap, get rolled out on a wheelchair only to return 10 minutes later and start taking down blinds and getting lucky on the river.

I guess, poker is the one game where Pierce’s flopping will help him out.
