To say fans are a bit miffed about the NBA lockout killing two weeks of the regular season would be an understatement.
Add the fact the possibility of more games to be lost and this will only increase fan’s frustrations as they feel forgotten in all this CBA mess. So it’s only natural fans will look to players as a source of angst. And that angst has gotten to Tony Allen.
The Grizzlies guard took to Twitter to voice his displeasure with fans who see the players as the main source in this lockout stalemate.
“If I see 1 more person on my timeline thinkn! The players want more money -im gone go crazy!!” Allen wrote, using his handle, @aa000G9.”
And it didn’t stop there. Allen went on to single out the owners and says he feels they are not smart with their money and who they choose to give hefty contracts.
“I personally work hard for my money!! I think!! It wouldn’t be a lockout!! If people made better judgement on who they give all that money2,” Allen wrote on Twitter. “And I. Agree with the owners some players start off good but end up like trash! Me on the other hand I’m just getn out in2 my zone let me go.”
“the 1s who locked us out for more (bri_) please know the facts we play the game fans love 2 watch so why do they want 2 cut us short!!”
“So for now on don’t @ me! About the players locking out cause it aint me and my crew!!”
Though Allen did mention fans are being lost in these CBA negotiations, he needs to understand fans cannot relate to individuals who are bickering over millions of dollars. They cannot relate and understand how men, who play a game for a living, and that in the long-term, really doesn’t give back to the improvement of society unlike professional educators.
Take Stephen Jackson’s rap video where it’s all about how he makes mounds of money and can buy practically anything. Do you really think fans will walk away from watching the video and think, “Yeah these guys need more money.” So Allen, how can you not expect fans to look squarely at players and feel the players are just as money-hungry as the owners?
Currently, people are marching throughout the U.S. protesting corporate greed yet here we are seeing individuals fight over money the average, hard-working individual will never realize in their lifetime.
It’s been said before but this is about millionaires arguing with billionaires over who will get richer.
Players can do all the exhibition games they want throughout this lockout and say they are giving back to the fan but what exactly are they giving back? Does watching men play basketball help home owners hit hard by the housing crisis? Is it going to help individuals with enormous student loan debt find that job they deserve and not see it go overseas? No.
So be a bit understanding with the fans Allen. Yes, the owners locked out you and your fellow players but in the end, your union is fighting to get you more money and security. Just keep things in perspective. You play a game for a living, have fame and notoriety, and make more money than the average person. You know, the same people who will buy pricey tickets, spend on team paraphernalia, and more just to go see you play.
