While the Minnesota Timberwolves negotiate with Kevin Love on either a four or five year max contract, there’s another Minnesota Timberwolves player from the 2008 draft class that likely won’t get an extension. That’s number two overall pick Michael Beasley.
Beasley, who is nursing a sprained foot right now, told reporters including the Minnesota Star Tribune’s Jerry Zgoda before yesterday’s game with the Houston Rockets that he doesn’t expect to sign an extension by the January 25 deadline.
“It looks like it’s going to go into summer,” said Beasley. “I’m not worried about it. Everything will take care of itself. I just want to get back on the floor.”
This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Would you include Michael Beasley in your long term plans? If the Timberwolves are smart, they just let Beasley walk this summer. They have two young guys in Wes Johnson and Derrick Williams playing behind the former Kansas State standout and Beasley can be how do you put it… volatile.
The real question is can David Kahn get anything in return for Beasley on the trade market? Probably not anything worth trading him for. He’s always been a productive player who shoots A TON, doesn’t play particularly hard on defense and has had some run ins with the law. Someone will sign him this summer and they’ll probably sign him for cheap.
