Count ‘Superman’ Out Of The Dunk Contest

With the 2012 NBA All-Star Game fast approaching, many fans will be looking forward to All-Star Saturday.

The highlight of All-Star Saturday is the Slam Dunk Contest . . . well it used to be a highlight.

Let’s face it, as the seasons have past since its inception, it lost a lot of luster as big name players have not participated. Gone are the days of big name players such as Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, and other taking part in the contest and now lesser-name players make up most of the panel of contestants.

However, seeing how All-Star weekend will be in Orlando, one would think Magic’s Dwight Howard would strap on his Superman cape and take flight for the hometown crowd and give the fans something to remember should he leave Orlando after this season.

But he isn’t.

According to Orlando Sentinel’s Josh Robbins, Howard isn’t going to try to reclaim his crown and cites age as a reason.

How great would it have been to see Howard take on defending champ Blake Griffin or seeing two 7-footers such as last year’s participant JaVale McGee go up against Howard for the crown?

Alas such possibilities will have to live in in fantasy world while the more likely reality will be hearing Kenny Smith prematurely say “Game over!” based off one good dunk, seeing what theatrics a player will perform to get the crowd hyped, or if the contest will be allegedly rigged as some theorized last year when Griffin won the dunk title.

Oh and at 26-years old, I don’t think Dwight is “old” to participate.
