There once was a time when Martell Webster was part of the Portland Trail Blazers rebuilding project as a former sixth overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft.
Now only 25 years old and with seven seasons in the league, Webster is once again part of a new era in the game as the Washington Wizards continue to shake things up this offseason.
According to multiple reports, the one-time Blazer and recently waived Minnesota Timberwolves small forward is planning to sign with Wizards in an expected one-year deal with the team.
Webster worked out with the Wizards this week as part of group that included Michael Redd, Terrence Williams and Shawne Williams and apparently management liked what they saw in Webster.
His best season came during the 2007-08 season in Portland when he averaged 10.7 points and 3.9 rebounds in 28.4 minutes per game, but injuries have plagued Webster throughout his career.
Webster essentially missed the entire 2008-09 season with the Blazers with a stress fracture in his left foot.
Two summers later, Webster was laid up again. Twice actually. This time it was his back. He felt more stiffness and pain in his back during the 2011 offseason and had to undergo back surgery for the second time in 13 months. And in two seasons in Minnesota, Webster appeared in 46 and 47 games respectively. However, if he can remain healthy Webster brings another dimension to the new-look Wizards who also acquired Trevor Ariza, Emeka Okafor, A.J. Price and drafted Bradley Beal.
A spot-up shooter, Washington will certainly put Webster’s shooting touch to use and after the way the last two seasons have gone for Webster there’s no doubt he’s looking to prove himself all over again.
