It’s Getting Pricier To Attend An NBA Game

Seems NBA fans are gong to have to dig deeper into their pockets if they want to attend an NBA game. For the first time in three years, average ticket prices are on the rise.

The NBA’s average ticket price increased for the first time in three years, up 1.7 percent to $48.48, the Team Marketing Report said Wednesday in its annual survey.

Sure this ticket price increase hasn’t happened in three years but this rising ticket prices news would come off the heels of an NBA lockout resulting in an shortened season. Nice timing NBA. This couldn’t wait until the end of this season (knowing the lockout is still on the minds of fans) to jack up ticket prices which were already steep for many NBA fans to begin with?

And of course some team fan bases are impacted more than others.

Knicks tickets averaged $117.47 after a 32.5 percent increase — and these figures don’t even include premium seats.

The Los Angeles Lakers were second at $99.25 after a 4.2 percent hike, and Boston third at $68.55 while leaving its average flat. Chicago was fourth at $68.37 with a 3.3 percent increase, followed by the Miami Heat at $67 following a 10.7 percent jump.

Memphis has the lowest average at $22.95, just below Washington ($23.64). Thirteen teams cut their average, and seven were flat.

It was bad enough the NBA didn’t even lower its steep cost for fans looking to subscribe to League Pass during this truncated season as a gesture of goodwill towards fans who dealt with the lockout, but some feel the play in the NBA this season is sub-par (like Charles Barkley) yet NBA prices climb. This makes total sense because this is exactly how the NBA is going to win back fans lost in the lockout (yes I am being sarcastic).

So far all the NBA has done is make minimal apologies, throw in your face the “Big Things” are coming ads and not much else to benefit the fans. Project this out and eventually attending an NBA game will be too expensive for fans to attend and might cause many fans to turn their back on the league as a whole.

Sure players and owners are getting richer (despite a new CBA) but what about the fans? What do they get?  All this means is the average NBA fan has to work those extra few hours at work, and save more pennies to pay for rising ticket prices. And eventually that will get tiring quick, leaving the NBA trying to do all it can to bring back those fans when they can be conscious about them now.
