The 2012 Olympics games are inching ever so close and the city of London is gearing up as all eyes of the
world will be upon the fair city.
From stadiums being erected, and other preparations currently underway, Olympic planners have decided to honor past Olympic heroes by naming subway (or tubes as they say in merry ol’ London) stops after them.
And of course, the 1992 Olympic “Dream Team” has an entire subway line named after individual members of that phenomenal basketball team.
All 12 members, Magic Johnson; Larry Bird; John Stockton; Karl Malone; David Robinson; Scottie Pippen; Patrick Ewing; Clyde Drexler; Christian Laettner; Michael Jordan; Chris Mullin; and Charles Barkley, will have their name adorned at each stop on the line (h/t Project Spurs).
Alex Trickett, former athletic director at the BBC, was the one who presented the project on the map of the legends of the Olympic Games, and said: “There were heated debates and some final changes, but we are happy with the result: dozens of nations represented, accounted for all Olympic sports.”
Other NBA players will also have subway stops named after them such as Kobe Bryant and Manu Ginobili.
Overall, I got to say this is a pretty creative way to honor not only the “Dream Team” but all past Olympic greats. Though I hope no elbows are thrown at the “Barkley” station stop as “Sir Charles” did to that Angolan in the ’92 games. But I digress.
The race for gold will be great among the basketball teams. USA is the clear front-runner now that Spain lost Ricky Rubio due to knee injury. However, Spain will still be a feisty bunch. Other gold contenders will be France and Argentina.
Perhaps for the 2016 Olympic games, a new crop of NBA stars will be honored in kind should Team USA capture gold yet again.
