Nets’ Williams to sit out three preseason games

No need to hit the panic button Nets fans but Deron Williams will be sitting out the next three preseason games as his sprained right ankle continues to heal.

"[My ankle's] getting better everyday," Williams said after signing autographs at a Nets community event in Brooklyn. "(We're) taking it slow, but with the goal of being ready for Game 1 [of the regular season]."

Williams hurt his ankle during an offseason workout in Utah.

Nets coach Jason Kidd said Thursday that Williams is only doing some light shooting. Kidd did not have a timetable as far as when his point guard would return to full-contact practice.

This is more than likely a precautionary move to ensure D-Will is ready to go come opening night. However, this team will need Williams to return to the fold considering they do not have much depth at back up point.

As Brooklyn's roster currently stands, Marco Jaric, Jorge Gutierrez, Shaun Livingston and Tyshawn Taylor make up the point guards. Needles to say, that crop doesn't inspire confidence if you are the Nets knowing Williams isn't at 100 percent. Also, should he succumb to another injury or re-aggravate the current one, again the team doesn't seem to have a solid back up point.

Considering the team brought in the likes of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Jason Terry and Andrei Kirilenko, this team will need Williams to be on the court with this veteran group if they want to make any noise in the East.

The health of Williams' bum ankle is definitely something to keep an eye on throughout the season if you are the Nets.
