Nicknames coming to NBA jerseys?

Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images/ZimbioThe NBA may officially be entering Spaceballs 2 territory.

Team jerseys are changing drastically with the introduction of more sleeved jerseys into the NBA with at least five teams in addition to the Warriors opting to showcase this new jerseyware. They might be experimental, but largely the reason is selling the jerseys to consumers and fans like you.

Here is a new one for you to get. Nickname jerseys.

The NBA is reportedly considering creating nickname jerseys for one of the matchups between the Heat and Nets — Nov. 1 (on ESPN), Jan. 10 (on ESPN), March 12 (on ESPN) or April 8 (on TNT). With all the games on national TV, the NBA will be looking to feature these unique jerseys and this promotion. Especially if you are willing to buy them.

From the Associated Press:

"It shows growth in our league and it shows we do adapt to what's going on around us," said Ray Allen, the Heat guard who plans to wear Shuttlesworth on his jersey, a nod to his character from the "He Got Game" film. "And we're still kids, playing a kids' game. Even though we're now men playing a kids' game, we still remember where we come from. Everybody had a nickname and it's a way to let the fans in a little bit more."

I guess it would be cool to own a Heat jersey with "Shuttlesworth" on the back. Or a Nets jersey that simply says, "The Truth."

See, there I go again, ready to drop $60 for a swingman jersey on NBA.com.

Kudos to the NBA for thinking of a new marketing ploy. People will buy these jerseys and people will love them. The players (for the most part) like the creativity involved in thinking up a nickname and having these special jerseys at least once.

Shane Battier might be the only one who does not like it. His request for "Batman" appears to be rejected because of copyright issues and is going to settle for "Shaneo."

This is supposed to be fun. So enjoy.
