Tracy McGrady to try his hand at baseball

Pitchers and catchers will report in a few short weeks for baseball teams around the country. For those that simply do not like basketball — a) I do not understand you — this is the beginning of spring and one of the more look forwarded days of the year.

It will have a distinctly NBA flavor this year. See, baseball fans, you cannot escape basketball!

Tracy McGrady, the former NBA All Star who recently retired after knee injuries continuously sapped him of his former All-Star days, is getting a tryout with the Sugar Land Skeeters in Texas of the Independent League. McGrady claims he can throw the ball 91 miles per hour. Is that enough to kick start a baseball career?

Probably not. But good on McGrady for following a childhood dream. He has a natural pitching form and was known to throw some heaters when he would throw the first pitch out at Atlanta Braves spring training.

Before McGrady sprouted up in high school, he dreamed of being a pitcher while growing up in Auburndale, Florida (about 45 minutes outside of Orlando). He was a pretty good baseball player too, but basketball became his calling. He clearly made the right choice after a decade-long career in the NBA and numerous All-Star appearances.

Injuries sapped him of becoming an even greater player. Hopefully his turn in baseball goes a little better, although his prospects have to be considered pretty dim.
