Celtics complete three-team trade to make some history

The Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, and Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to a trade, as reported by ESPN, to send Austin Rivers to L.A. to play for his dad. This would be the first time in NBA history that a father will coach his son, although there was a close call when Coby Karl was playing for the Nuggets while his dad was coach, but the elder Karl was on leave to take care of his cancer diagnosis at the time.

The deal will send Rivers to the Clippers, former L.A. first-round pick Reggie Bullock to the Suns and two players to the Celtics: Phoenix big man Shavlik Randolph and L.A. swingman Chris Douglas-Roberts. The Clippers will also waive veteran guard Jordan Farmar to create the needed roster space for the deal. The Boston Herald reported Thursday that the Celtics plan to release Douglas-Roberts; Real GM first reported Randolph’s inclusion in the trade. The Celtics will also acquire the future draft pick they had been seeking from the Clippers — one 2017 second-rounder — and likewise generate a trade exception worth $2.4 million.

The Celtics have now made an astounding nine trades involving nine teams since the start of the season and have now made four trades in five league business days, redefining the familiar NBA scheduling term “four in five” usually referenced in scheduling games. The Celtics acquired Rivers as part of the other mega three-team deal that happened earlier in the week.
