The Chicago Bulls announced via a press release today that Derrick Rose will have to undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.
The team has not yet placed a timetable on his return, and a lot of that has to do with whether or not Rose, along with the Bulls, choose to have the meniscus completely removed or repaired.
Rose had the meniscus in his right-knee repaired last season, rather than having it removed all together, so he could potentially have a longer career. Electing to remove the meniscus could mean Rose could be back as early as six weeks from now, but he’d run the risk of shortening his already injury-riddled career.
It’s a tough situation, for Rose and the Bulls, and neither is option is all that appealing considering Rose is going to miss a significant amount of time no matter what.
The Bulls, already dealing with controversy from the top on down this season, will have to survive with Kirk Hinrich and Aaron Brooks down the stretch, at least, and possibly even come playoff time.
Rose was averaging 21.3 points, 5.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds per 36 minutes this season.
