Philadelphia Waives JaVale McGee

According to ESPN.com and NBA.com, the Phiadelphia 76ers have waived recently acquired center JaVale McGee. Man, who saw that coming?

McGee was let go from the 76ers before midnight March 1st, and once he clears waivers this week he will become a free agent. Since he was waived before March 2nd, McGee can appear in the playoffs this season with another team looking to add depth for a playoff push.

JaVale McGee is still slated to earn $11.2 million this season and will still be paid his $12 million salary next year by the 76ers.

The 76ers took on McGee’s unworthy, exorbitant, contract from a trade with the Denver Nuggets in a deadline deal that also sent a first-round pick Philly’s way. McGee originally told local reporters, “I don’t want to get bought out. That’s not a positive thing.”

McGee had no chance to make a long stint with the 76ers given they have a young core of big men in Nerlens Noel and Joel Embiid.

Teams that could be interested in adding frontline depth for a push in the playoffs might include the Grizzlies, Clippers, Trail Blazers or Hawks.
