Ever since the SuperSonics left Seattle for Oklahoma City the city has felt scorned, like they lost a piece of their soul. In a way they did, and they have been fighting for that piece back ever since.
There have been rumors and theories on how an NBA team could end up back in Seattle, but it is all just talk until the city can find out how to resolve the issues that caused the team to move in the first place.
It basically comes down to money and a new arena.
Seattle has been working on getting the money and the new arena, and commissioner David Stern is very much aware.
“Everyone says to us, ‘Well, would you consider going back?’ Of course, if they have a building. And so that’s where it’s left. We have no involvement,” Stern said. “But we certainly are — if anyone asks us, we tell them what we know and we’re happy to talk to them. … There’s no shortage of potential sites, but the funding is a huge issue.”
So it looks like Seattle might have an “if you build it, they will come” sort of situation. In life, there are never any guarantees but it appears the city will try their best to get NBA basketball back.
I wish them the best of luck because I know it is something the city really wants. They are one of the biggest cities in the country, so I am sure they would have no trouble packing their new arena. Not to mention, people always seem so grateful when they get back something they have lost.
