The Look Ahead for March 14

look_ahead

Our nightly look ahead to the schedule with a couple of notes and story lines so you can plan out your NBA viewing.  All Times Eastern.

Fire up the League Pass

76ers_logo7:00  Philadelphia 76’ers @ Indiana Pacers (ESPN) pacers_logo

A pair of teams with almost even records meet up tonight in Indy, but Philly is looking to assert itself with new look to its lineup.  Evan Turner is averaging 22 points and 12 rebounds over his last three games as a starter.  He shot poorly in his first game as a starter, but has taken off from there.

Indiana, meanwhile, has been pretty ordinary lately.  This will be a good test to see where each team stands in the East.

Couple of notes:

  • With a mark of 24-16 the Pacers are off to their best overall start since they were 25-10 in the first 35 games of 2003-04
  • the Sixers are 25-17 this season, their best start since going 32-10 in 2000-01

magic_logo8:30  Orlando Magic @ San Antonio Spurs

The Dwight Howard saga has hit its strangest point yet, but that all still hasn’t seemed to faze the Magic at all.  They’ve now have a three game win streak that includes wins over Chicago, Indiana, and Miami.  They’re solidly the third seed in the East and they’ve shown a resiliency to overcome things that would have sunk a lot of teams by now.

San Antonio, after an amazing road stretch to close out the first part of the season, has become quite ordinary lately.  They’ve been alternating wins and losses since the February 20th Utah game.  The Spurs did the whole “start hot and fade” thing last year…. are they starting to do it again?

Couple of notes:

  • Orlando has lost eight of the last 10 matchups in San Antonio
  • The Spurs are the only team in the NBA to be ranked in the top 5 in points per game, field goal percentage, 3FG percentage, assists and (fewest) turnovers per game

Eastern Conference Finals preview anyone?

There’s nothing left to say.  This is one of those must-watch games.  Even if your favorite team is on, you flip to this one during the breaks.

Couple of notes:

  • A win tonight would give Miami a 32-10 record, marking their best 42-game start in franchise history.
  • The Bulls have grabbed 50 or more rebounds a league-high 14 times

Other story lines for tonight:

7:00  Toronto-New Jersey:  Brook Lopez and Deron Williams will miss tonight’s game.

7:30  Portland-New York:  Mike Woodson takes over tonight.  How will the players, respond to the D’Antoni departure?

8:00  LA Lakers-New Orleans:  A back-to-back after a double over time game for the Lakers.  Do they have any legs left for this one?

8:00  Charlotte-Houston:  The Rockets look for their 11th win in 13 meetings with Charlotte.

8:00  Cleveland-Milwaukee:  Can Cleveland take advantage of a shorthanded Bucks squad after the trade with Golden State?

10:00  Detroit-Sacramento:  Detroit has registered 11 of its 15 wins this season since the start of February.

10:30  Boston-Golden State:  Golden State, already shorthanded after the Ellis trade, may also shut down Stephen Curry for the season

10:30  Atlanta-LA Clippers:  How will Atlanta react on a back-to-back after to dropping a winnable game to Denver in OT?

10:30  Utah-Phoenix:  Utah has lost 12 of 15 on the road, and six straight to Phoenix.

John’s Picks:
Philadelphia, Orlando, Chicago, Toronto, Portland, New Orleans, Houston, Cleveland, Detroit, Boston, LA Clippers, Phoenix
