Houston, Kevin Love Says They Have A Coach In Minnesota

Kevin Love posted an update on his Facebook page around 2pm today that read: “Houston, we have a coach.”  As opposed to 1995, that is, when Tom Hanks informed flight command similarly in Texas that his team had a “problem.”

That coach to replace Kurt Rambis in leadership of Kevin Love’s Minnesota Timberwolves is widely assumed to be Rick Adelman.  A report from the Minneapolis Star Tribune on Monday morning indicated that negotiations had begun between Adelman and the Timberwolves, offering the following:

“The Timberwolves have started negotiations to sign Rick Adelman as their next coach, league sources with knowledge of the search said Sunday.

David Kahn, Timberwolves president of basketball operations, might know as soon as Monday whether he can land the man who has a .605 winning percentage in 20 seasons as a NBA head coach.

Adelman, 65, is believed to be seeking a five-year contract worth at least $25 million. The Houston Rockets did not re-sign Adelman when a four-year, $16.25 million contract he signed in 2007 expired after last season.

Adelman is one of seven candidates known to have interviewed for a job that opened when the Wolves fired Kurt Rambis in July. The others: Don Nelson, Sam Mitchell, Mike Woodson, Bernie Bickerstaff, Larry Brown and Terry Porter.”

If the Timberwolves do end up signing Adelman I think it’s a great move forward for the organization.  Rick Adelman is a pro and he’s also creative offensively.  There are a lot of decent pieces out there in Minnesota right now, but to the untrained eye it’s hard to understand how they could all fit together successfully.  I think Adelman has as good a chance as anybody at figuring something out, and he’ll have them back to respectability as quick as anybody else could ever hope to do.

So for as many bad moves as David Kahn has made, hiring Adelman is a good one as far as I can tell.  No matter how much jack Rick ends up taking them for in the process.
