Crossover Chronicles Podcast: Tim Roye

Tim Roye is in his 21st season as the Golden State Warriors’ radio play-by-play voice. For nearly two full decades, he witnessed some of the worst basketball imaginable. In his first 16 years, the Warriors were over .500 just twice, and he had to wait 11 years for the first such instance. In one five-year stretch the team managed just 97 wins, an average of under 20 per season.

Somehow, while the Warriors had a revolving door in the locker room, Roye had a firm grip on the microphone. His ability to be honest about what he saw without calling anyone’s character into question (except a referee here and there) was no doubt a part of that formula.

In this interview, Roye talks about Luke Walton going to the Lakers, the importance of Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston to the Warriors’ success, and the way the internal culture has changed since Joe Lacob and Peter Guber bought the team in 2010.

I listen to a lot of NBA games on the radio (NBA League Pass, $10 a season), and I can say that Tim is one of the very best out there. He has the very unique ability to work alone (as he does on the road during the regular season) or with a partner (former Warrior Tom Tolbert does color on home games during the regular season and all games in the playoffs). The voice of the Warriors is clear and resonant in any context or situation.

Tim is also a great Twitter follow: @WarriorsVox
