David Stern added a few names to his people to fine mercilessly just as soon as this lockout ends list yesterday. The first being whoever those several owners were that told Woj they think he makes between $20 and $23 million dollars a year, a group Stern has currently narrowed down to thirty suspects, and then Spencer Hawes.
As if walking around with a reminder that the city of Seattle just had their Sonics ripped from them under Stern’s watched carved into the back of his head wasn’t enough to fire the little Commissioner up already, the tweet Hawes posted last night probably did when he offered the following:
“23 million a year for stern huh. Weird no rumblings about a pay cut for the commish while he asks every single player to do so.”
Hawes also responded to a Hoopshype tweet referencing that Yahoo! report about Stern’s salary just prior as well, when he posted this as a warm-up to the tip-dunk tweet he slammed down on Stern’s desk a couple hours later:
“@hoopshype commish wants his annual compensation to trump new max salary by nearly double. Interesting thought.”
What’s also interesting is that I seem to remember Roger Goodell cutting his salary to $1 during the NFL lockout, and his league’s not locked out anymore. Might be something for Stern to consider here, because it’s hard to argue with Hawes’ logic. If Stern’s salary is on the higher end of what was reported yesterday, I imagine the players union might mention that a few thousand times during negotiations. They might also argue that nobody is paying money to see David Stern commission games either, as good as he might be at doing so.
