The simple fact was that something wasn’t working in Washington.  We knew the Wizards wouldn’t be great, but they have more talent than 2-15. But they have shown a lack of poise and a lack of discipline, and that falls on the coach.

In a game where the Wizards were fighting to beat the Houston Rockets, Javale McGee tossed himself an alley oop off the board that landed him on the bench.  In a game where the Wizards were fighting to beat the Boston Celtics, Nick Young got a tech for taunting after a dunk, giving the Celtics a free point in a back-and-forth game the Wizards would ultimately lose.

And while Saunders did reprimand his team after the fact, that’s too late.  Saunders needed to create a culture where that stuff doesn’t happen in the first place.  The Wizards need a culture where being brash and young is channeled properly through game intensity, not personal highlights and poorly timed emotional outbursts.

The Wizards need a strong voice to get the talent in line and working together.  Flip’s departure from Washington was only a matter of time.

There’s no word on who will take over the team in the interim.  But the Wizards still have a lot of work to do.  Hiring the right guy to coach them is a big step in thier progression.
