Stephen A. Smith falls for Onion joke

For those of you who don’t know, The Onion is a satirical news outlet that produces content in print, video and web form. They often take shots at athletes or figures in sports, but everybody knows it’s just a joke like something you might see on Saturday Night Live.

Everybody except Stephen A. Smith.

The Onion recently posted a satirical article about the ESPN anchor titled, “Stephen A. Smith Thinking Son Is Finally Ready For The Sex Argument.” Smith doesn’t have a 9-year-old son like the article states. It was clearly just made up to make fun of the fact that Smith would rather argue than talk about an issue, even with his own family.

But Smith took to Twitter to defend himself.

“I thought I’d heard enough despicable lies about myself. Now there’s some article out that I have a 9-yr-old son and I’m going to have a conversation with him about Sex. Mind you, I neither have a son nor a 9-Year-old. Some ppl are beyond despicable. No end! Sad what extent people will go to. Amazing how folks try to tear cats down, primarily due to perceived power of the spoken word. Damn Shame, but too bad. Because I don’t intend on going anywhere. Really, Really sad, though!”

Sounds to me like The Onion struck a nerve. Wonder if Smith is hiding anything?

Eventually, someone clued him in to the fact that The Onion is a gag news outlet and the whole thing was just a joke.

“Haaaaa. The got me. I didn’t know it was on Satire! Got it. Peeps got jokes. It’s cool!”

Random side note: You're a professional journalist, please learn how to type out real sentences.

In the end, no harm, no foul. Just another one of The Onion’s classic pranks that somebody was stupid enough to believe was real news. Maybe they can get Skip Bayless next.
