The Milwaukee Bucks’ experiment of putting two point guards in their starting lineup may finally be coming to an end this summer.
It is easy to say things did not really work out how the Bucks had hoped they would, but with Brandon Jennings becoming a restricted free agent at the end of this season, they will most likely be back down to one.
Jennings and Monta Ellis have shared the backcourt in Milwaukee for almost a year now but they still have not clicked well enough to make the Bucks a relevant team. They are currently fighting just to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference.
So with (restricted) free agency looming, is Jennings starting to envision himself somewhere else?
Possibly.
The Dallas Mavericks were reportedly interested in Jennings before this season’s trade deadline, but the Bucks were not offering him up. However, this summer the Mavericks will have a lot of cash to spend, and could be interested in making an offer for the young point guard. Jennings is clearly excited about the possibility.
“Who wouldn’t want to play in an environment like this every night?” said Jennings. “You’ve got an owner [Mark Cuban] who’s so into his team. Every time you see the Mavs, you see him cheering or going crazy. They won a championship. They’re about winning.”
I sense a slight dig at his current team right there.
As for the Mavericks, I think Mark Cuban has been very careful not to show his hand just yet. They were interested in Deron Williams and Dwight Howard, but neither worked out and now they have a lot of flexibility. You know Cuban hates to lose, and with his team currently sitting outside the playoff picture, he is surely going to make some big moves this offseason to get them back on track.
Is Jennings a part of Cuban’s master plan? That remains to be seen, but I think it is pretty clear that Brandon Jennings is not too happy in Milwaukee, so I would not be surprised to see him on the move soon. However, it is important to remember, the Bucks can match any offer Jennings receives this summer. So Jennings ultimately may not have a choice.
